Efren Peñaflorida and Efren Abueg Visit Lipa City Colleges
It has been a great honor and privilege for Lipa City Colleges to welcome two of the Philippine’s pride from the field of education and literature whose exemplary contributions are truly deserving to be recognized. Mr. Efren Peñaflorida, the first Filipino who has been named as “2009 CNN Hero of the Year” and Dr. Efren R. Abueg, a well-renowned novelist in Filipino and a multi-awarded fictionist were invited to take part on the institutional events in order to inspire people in a simple but remarkable way.
To inculcate in the people’s minds the real value of education, the 1st Batangas Educators’ Convention was held on August 18, 2010 at 8:00 in the morning at Lipa City Colleges, Audio-Visual Room. With the theme “Better Education for a Gen Y Nation”, Mr. Effen Peñaflorida keynoted the event. He expressed that people should know how to “LEAD” and leave a legacy.
-ive the purpose
-ove the people
-exercise your faith
-execute your plans
-eal with your weaknesses
-well in your strength
The event drew a crowd of more than 200 participants comprised of principals and administrators from both public and private schools all over Batangas together with the selected students of LCC, faculty and staff as well as the members of the administration. Ms. Sarita Kare, news anchor of TV Patrol Southern Tagalog and Ms. Dianne Hernandez, representative from WOW Batangas covered the activity and grabbed the opportunity to conduct an interview with the CNN Hero.
Mr. Peñaflorida who pioneered “pushcart classrooms” in the Philippines to offer poor Filipino youth an education as an alternative to gang membership was able to make a choice on building a difference in a positive way. His inspiring talk really caught the attention and interest of the participants which could serve as their guiding light “to be the change that this world needs to be”.
Meanwhile, during the afternoon event, Dr. Efren R. Abueg, one of the major contributors to the country’s wealth of literature shared his expertise on the theme “Diskurso: Daluyan ng Masining at Mabisang Pagpapahayag” in consonance with the celebration of Buwan ng Wika.
Dr. Abueg has rendered lasting contributions to the Philippine literature winning six Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for his short stories, the Philippine Free Press Awards for the short story in Filipino, and four Liwayway Literature Prizes for his novels. Having him as one of the speakers on the event would certainly encourage individuals to appreciate the abundance and variety of our literature.
Lipa City Colleges truly appreciates the presence and participation of these two idealistic men whose extraordinary deeds are needed to be emulated. With the goals to provide quality education and to help promote and preserve the Filipino cultural heritage, Lipa City Colleges proudly announced its support to whatever meaningful endeavor that Mr. Efren Peñaflorida and Dr. Abueg shall initiate.
